2009-11-19 - State-of-the-art equipment to handle extremely high continuous current
Montreal, Quebec, Canada – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has been awarded an order to supply two UNITROL® 6800 static excitation systems and two excitation transformers for a large coal-fired power plant in the United States. These will be the largest units ever produced and installed in North America by ABB.
The scope of supply for this retrofit includes two fully redundant UNITROL® 6800 static excitation systems each with five parallel UNL 14300 converter modules and a 9.1 MVA 26 kV/690 VAC 3x single-phase excitation transformers (Triplex design). Each UNITROL® 6800 unit is capable of generating a continuous current of 9’377 A DC as well as ceiling current 12’786 A DC for 30 seconds.
The UNITROL® 6800 is the latest and most powerful generation of static excitation systems, based on AC 800PEC control platform. The units are scheduled to be delivered in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
Vast experience in the field of static excitation systems, including design and installation of large-scale units, were the key factors that helped ABB win this project. ABB has also worked with the customer on several previous projects.
“The customer had complete confidence in our technical expertise after we proposed a more technically superior solution than what was originally requested,” said Mark Smith, the excitation systems sales engineer who worked on the project.
Excitation systems regulate the voltage and reactive power output of a generator. This crucial element in power generation is required for system stability and power network stability.
